Lien timeline calculator

A self storage lien timeline is the list of dates for each notice, advertisement and the earliest sale, counted from the day rent went unpaid. Pick your state and the date rent was due to see those dates with the statute behind each one.

General information, not legal advice. Review with your attorney.

Your default

The day the unpaid rent was due. This is day 0.

Your timeline will show here

Choose a state and the date rent was due. You will get each notice, advertisement and the earliest sale date, with the statute behind each one.

How it works

  • Step date = date rent was due + the statute’s day count for that step
  • Earliest sale date = the later of the statute’s day count from default, or the statute’s minimum days after the lien notice is sent

Each state’s day counts come from our statute research and are added to your date as calendar days. A step with no statutory day count shows as set by owner, which means you and your attorney choose the date.

The earliest sale date is the first day the statute allows a sale if every earlier step was done correctly. It is not a promise that you can sell on that day.

If we have not verified a state’s statute yet, the tool says so and shows no dates for that state. We would rather show nothing than a date we cannot stand behind.

Frequently asked questions

How long until I can auction a storage unit?

It depends on the state and on how quickly you send each notice. Pick your state in the calculator to see the earliest sale date the statute allows.

Which date should I enter?

Enter the date the rent was due and went unpaid. Some statutes count from a different event, such as the date a notice is sent. The step list shows what each count is based on, and your attorney can confirm it.

Why does my state show no dates?

We have not verified every state’s statute yet. For those states the tool shows the statute links and a note instead of dates.

Does the earliest sale date mean I can sell on that day?

No. It is the earliest date the statute allows, assuming every earlier notice and advertisement was done correctly and no pause applies, such as active duty military status.

Does this tool send notices or store my data?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you enter is saved or sent.
